Small and Simple Steps

Better conversations begin with better understanding.

Small & Simple Steps develops practical education programmes that help people think clearly, communicate calmly and build lasting internal capability.

People rarely make their best decisions when they feel under pressure.

That’s why we help organisations create environments where people can pause, think clearly together and communicate with confidence.

The space between pressure and response

In demanding environments, communication breakdowns rarely happen because people lack a script. They happen because acute pressure forces us to react before we truly understand what is driving a situation. When people are under pressure, behaviour often reflects stress or distress rather than intention.

Our goal isn’t to encourage compliance or teach people what to think. It’s to help them think more clearly together.

Communication is the vehicle, not the destination. Our aim isn’t simply to improve conversations. It’s to improve how people think together, because better thinking leads to better conversations, better decisions and better outcomes. When an organisation lacks a shared way to pause, reflect, and process, the quality of collective thinking is compromised. This friction shows up in everyday practice:

  • Accumulated strain

Teams navigate intense, emotional interactions without a unified way to step back, leading quietly to workplace friction and staff turnover.

  • Escalating friction

Misunderstandings with colleagues, service users, or families that could have been resolved with a thoughtful pause instead turn into complex disruptions.

  • Reactive days

Leaders and teams spend their finite energy responding to immediate reactions rather than exploring the underlying causes.

Building capability that lasts

  • More than a training day

Our goal isn’t simply to deliver a training day. It’s to help organisations build a culture where people think more clearly together, challenge respectfully and communicate with confidence.

  • Capability, not dependency

We believe lasting change comes through internal capability rather than repeated external training. We partner with you for the long term, helping you build confident internal facilitators and giving your organisation a licensed programme that becomes an established part of everyday practice.

  • A licence designed to grow

Organisations usually begin with an initial licence period, but our licences are designed to be renewed and extended — so your internal delivery keeps evolving alongside new, real-world scenario developments.

What we believe

  • We believe the strongest organisations aren’t those where everyone agrees. They’re the organisations where people feel safe to think, question, challenge and learn together.
  • We believe understanding comes before judgement.
  • We believe behaviour often reflects stress or distress rather than intention.
  • We believe respectful challenge strengthens teams.
  • We believe reflection leads to better decisions.
  • We believe communication is about more than words. It’s about creating the conditions where people can think clearly together.

Because better conversations begin with better understanding.

Our frameworks & practice

The foundations of clear thinking

Our programmes are built around the Small & Simple Steps communication framework, including our PREPARE framework for navigating challenging conversations.

We rely heavily on scenario-based learning grounded in real life. Because reflection helps people make better decisions, our practical approach guides teams through two sequential learning experiences:

Seeking to understand

Before we can be understood, we must seek to understand. This experience focuses on recognising stress and emotion in others without judgement, allowing intense conversations to stay safe, calm, and on track.

From conflict to collaboration

Once understanding is established, teams can move past defensive reactions. This experience equips people to listen well, explore different perspectives, and think clearly together when under pressure.

A supported, evaluated journey

We believe that measuring impact is just as important as delivering education. When you license our framework, we walk with your organisation to evaluate the real impact of the learning using recognised educational evaluation methods, including the Kirkpatrick Model.

We track how the framework moves from an initial classroom experience into a living part of your everyday practice:

  1. Experiential learning

Your key team members experience the core programme firsthand. We look closely at initial engagement and how comfortably they absorb the principles, ensuring absolute clarity from day one.

  2. Facilitator development

We support your selected internal leaders to master our practical adult education approach, building confident internal facilitators who can hold psychological safety and guide scenario-based learning for your wider teams.

  3. Continuous evaluation & extended growth

As your facilitators roll the programme out internally, we evaluate how these new communication behaviours are being used in everyday practice. Respectful challenge strengthens organisations, and our continual evaluation captures these long-term cultural shifts as your licence extends over time.

Where better thinking is essential

We help organisations create environments where people feel psychologically safe to ask questions, explore different perspectives, challenge respectfully and work collaboratively towards the best outcome

We develop tailored, real-life learning scenarios for:

Health and social care teams

Supporting teams navigating complex care, family dynamics, and high-stress clinical or residential situations.

Housing and public services

Equipping frontline teams to handle intense community interactions calmly, safely, and respectfully.

Charities and non-profits

Supporting caseworkers and advocates to manage deeply emotional human challenges without taking on secondary trauma.

Teams and leaders

Helping colleagues build a supportive internal culture where people can challenge each other professionally and work constructively under pressure.

Real success isn’t measured by what happens in the classroom. It’s measured by what happens in the conversations that follow.

We don’t simply teach communication. We help organisations create environments where people think clearly together, communicate calmly under pressure, challenge respectfully, and seek to understand before they react.

If you would like to explore how to build this lasting internal capability within your organisation, let’s talk things through.
